Police set up Drink Driving Campaign for safer roads

A drink driving campaign which was set up in June found more than 200 drivers being arrested.

The campaign, which ran between June 1 and June 30, saw an increase in arrests this year which resulted in 239 drivers being arrested.

This year’s campaign saw a two per cent increase in the drivers arrested compared to last year, as 234 drivers were arrested during June last year.

Drivers were arrested for driving with excess alcohol or refusing to provide a specimen.

Out of the 239 drivers arrested, 200 were male (84 per cent)  and 39 were female (16 per cent). The campaign showed an increase of nine per cent in the arrests of male drivers and a 25 per cent reduction in the arrests of female drivers (reduced from 52 last year).

106 out of the 239 arrests were made in Berkshire, 69 in Buckinghamshire and 64 in Oxfordshire.

Only 99 drivers were charged, along with 95 bailed, just one cautioned and 44 released without further action.

Police targeted individuals in which they suspected could be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the campaign focusing on drivers who could be caught both on the way home from nights out and the morning after a heavy night. with alcohol still in their system.

The oldest driver arrested was a 73-year-old man caught on Edward Street, Abingdon and the youngest was an 18-year-old, who was arrested in Monks Way, Milton Keynes, both arrested at the start of this year’s campaign, on the very first day.

A/Supt Henry Parsons, head of roads policing for Thames Valley and Hampshire, said: “Although our drink drive campaign finished on July 1, we focus on arresting drink drivers 365 days a year. Our message is that if you drink and drive, we will be looking to arrest you and put you before the courts.

He also added, “If you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. It’s too dangerous and not worth the risk.”

Police Drink-driving Summer Crackdown

This year’s campaign found that 94 out of 2,616 drivers were over the legal alcohol limit when breathalyzed.

The campaign took course over a period of four weeks.

Those over the limit involved 21 drivers under the age of 25 and 61 drivers aged 25 and over.

However, 110 drivers were caught over the limit last year, when the campaign ran at the same time as the European Football Championships.

Officers have been known to step up recently by participating in road checks across the county more frequently, in areas where some drivers believe that they are less likely to get caught, fully aware they are drink driving.

Reduction manager for Essex police Adam Pipe, commented: “Sadly some people consider themselves to be above the law and make the decision to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both.

“Not only does this put their lives at risk but the lives of their passengers or other innocent road users who drive well within the law”

Mr Pipe said that every year he has been disappointed to see that a small minority of people ignore the law and choose to drink and drive, but also that drink drivers will not be tolerated and they will continue to be arrested, putting them before the courts where they will be brought to justice.

Mother Avoids Prison For Drink Driving

A woman was fined £500 along with 10 days in Prison in default of payment for drink driving whilst her children were inside the vehicle.

The mother, Alison Norris, aged 45 put her three young children inside the car just before a late night crash.

Shortly after setting off with the youngsters, Winchester Crown Court heard that she lost full control of the vehicle and collided with another car after leaving the road.

Thankfully, the children were not injured but the experience was thought to be ”very alarming” for them, said by Mr Justice Burnett.

Divorcee Norris was believed to have failed two breath tests, one just after police arrived on the scene on the 30th December last year in Chandler’s Ford and another when she was taken to the police station. The two tests proved that she was more than three times over the limit and she admitted driving with excess alcohol at a previous hearing and was also forced to pay a victim’s surcharge of £50.

However, Norris was offered to have her disqualification reduced by a quarter by taking part and attending in a drink-drivers’ awareness course.

During the court case, the face she was driving along with her three children under such dangerous circumstances was described by the judge as a ”serious aggravating feature”.

The judge said that he was satisfied the justice of the case could be met with a disqualification and a fine.
